Eighteen area artists display works at Avoyelles exhibit
Works from eighteen Avoyelles area residents are on display at the second annual Avoyelles Artists' Exhibit, called Les Peintres des Avoyelles, which translates to The Painters of Avoyelles.
The event opened Jan 12 and will end on Feb 13. Works include oil, water, acrylics, photography, pen and ink, and chalk. Full article.
Hard freeze warning for Jan 12 in Avoyelles
The National Weather Service in Lake Charles recently issued a hard freeze warning, which is in effect from midnight tonight to 8 Am CST Jan 13. Estimates are that tonight’s low temperature will dip to the Mid-to-lower-20s for several hours in Avoyelles Parish. Full information.
Avoyelles Veterans Day activities
There’s a host of Veterans Day activities slated for Avoyelles Parish, including a Veteran’s Day program in Mansura, a rededication of the Veterans Monument at Edgars Park in Marksville, a memorial service in Fifth Ward and a Veterans Day program in Bunkie. Full article.
$23,000 awarded to Tunica-Biloxi Housing for day care center
Cenla Tunica-Biloxi Housing, Inc. will receive $23,098 in Partnership Grant Program (PGP) funds from IBERIA Band, Red River Bank, The Cottonport Bank, and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) to purchase equipment for a day care that will serve employees of businesses on the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe's Reservation. Avoyelles Parish ACT scores among highest increase in Cenla ACT scores
Avoyelles Parish school officials received good news: Avoyelles Parish had among the highest improvement in ACT score in the state, and the biggest improvement among Cenla school districts, with Avoyelles students achieving a composite 19.4 out of a possible 36 points on the standardized test. Police Jury issues burn ban in Avoyelles
Effective Aug 16, a burn ban is now in effect until further notice for all of Avoyelles Parish. This is the second time a burn ban has been issued for the parish this summer, which has been one of the driest summers on record. Full article.
New Speed Limit
Speed limits along rural areas of Interstate 49 in Avoyelles, Natchitoches and Rapides parishes will increase to 75 miles per hour. Full article.
Australian company to drill 2nd well in Avoyelles Parish
Pryme Oil and Gas Limited of Australia recently announced that completed funding for its share of drilling costs for the second well in the Pryme's Turner Bayou Chalk project in Avoyelles Parish. Drilling the second well is slated to begin in May. Full article.
Rapides, Avoyelles sheriffs say no to Louisiana handoff of state prisons
LA’s Dept of Public Safety and Corrections recently announced plans for sweeping changes for Correctional Centers located in Pineville, Cottonport, Kinder and Atlanta. However, reaction at the news ranged from surprise to dismay among facility employees, lawmakers and even law enforcement professionals the state claimed agreed to participate in the changed structure. Presidential candidate to stop in Marksville
No one may have heard of this presidential candidate, but he is making headlines in small communities. The candidate, John Davis is visiting the smaller towns across America in his campaign. Davis will be brining his message to Marksville on February 12, 2011. Davis is a self-made Colorado businessman without a college degree. He said he does not look, act or talk like a president, but he has what it takes to be president. Full article.
