MouseMail traps cyberbullies

Parents will soon have a formidable new weapon in the war against cyberbullying, sexting and other inappropriate messages sent to their kids. A free filtering program called MouseMail, will let parents track both questionable e-mails and cellphone text messages. MouseMail filters e-mail for improper words and unknown contacts and forwards dubious messages to a parent's account. Full article.  

 

Snow Fest comes to Natchitoches

On November 26 and 27, bring the entire family to enjoy the first-ever "Snow Fest" in downtown Natchitoches. The snow will be operational on two days on the downtown riverbank on November 26 and 27. Those sliding down the hill must be at least 42 inches tall to participate. Full article.  

 

Flu shots to be given at Rapides Parish Health Unit Friday, Oct. 29 in Alexandria

Flu shots will be given to children from 6 months to 18 years of age, adults over 50 years of age, and high-risk individuals at the Rapides Parish Health Unit, 5604-A Coliseum Blvd on Oct. 29. There is a maximum administrative fee of $10, waived for those with Medicare, Medicaid, and Vaccines for Children eligible clients. Full article.  

 

One Day Breastfeeding Class @ RRMC

9:00am - 3:00pm Medical Terrace, Gallery Room Rapides Regional Medical Center.
 

Intended for women wanting to breastfeed their infants, this class is taught by a lactation educator and focuses on advantages, preparation and troubleshooting techniques. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding for your baby. The support partner/father is welcome to attend. $30 fee (includes lunch), waived if delivering at Rapides Women's and Children's Hospital.

Having a dog does improve your health

Research shows that dogs are good for us -- for our health, for our children and for our communities in general. New research on childhood obesity by Jo Salmon, a professor at Australia's Deakin University, shows dog ownership can decrease a child's chances of being obese by as much as 50 percent. Rise seen in births to illegal dwellers

Data from the Pew Hispanic Center indicate that children born to illegal immigrants on U.S. soil jumped to 4 million in 2009, which represents 5.4 percent of all children under the age of 18 in the U.S. The study comes as some legislators, including Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., are calling for a revision of the 14th Amendment that grants citizenship to anyone born in the United States. Full Article. 

 

Social Security Card Scam

Authorities say hundreds of online businesses are using computers to find unused Social Security numbers. Those numbers are usually assigned to children who don't use them. Scam artists are finding the numbers, then selling them under another name to help people get phony credit that they never pay off. Full Article.  

 

Food Bank to provide meals through program

The Food Bank of Central LA will provide free meals to eligible children at two locations through its participation in the Summer Food Service Program. Acceptance and participating requirements for the program and all activities are the same for everyone, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Full Article.
