Retargeting Internet ads

Some companies are beginning to target customers who look at their website ads. If nothing is purchased, an email will follow that customer. The practice is called "retargeting" and critics say there may be concerns about privacy that may need to be addressed with regulations. Full Article.

 

Debate grows over Wal-Mart’s use of Smart Tags

Wal-Mart will be putting radio tags on clothing it sells for inventory control. Aside from helping Wal-Mart maintain inventories that reflect customer demand, tags may also help with recalls or to verify if something is authentic or a counterfeit. Critics, however, are concerned that customers can be scanned without their knowledge and some privacy advocates hypothesize that, since the tags can’t be turned off, unscrupulous marketers or criminals will be able to drive by consumers’ homes and scan their garbage to identify recent purchases.
