The public is invited to attend the American Red Cross of Central Louisiana’s “Live Shelter Model” Sept. 24-25, in the Alexandria Mall. The Live Shelter is a model and a preview to show the public one of Red Cross’ primary roles during a disaster – sheltering people who are displaced and is set up in the area of the mall near Victoria’s Secret. Chouest's company is playing big role in oil-disaster relief
Since the outset of the BP Deepwater Horizon offshore explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, Edison Chouest Offshore (ECO), the company owned by future Hornets owner Gary Chouest, has been deeply involved in many facets of the disaster. The Joe Griffin, a functional but luxurious tow barge, helped battle the initial fire on the rig and brought the “box” to the site of the spill. Crude awakening
The phrase “Drill, baby, drill” isn’t so popular these days. From the oil industry’s perspective, the timing of the oil spill tragedy couldn’t be worse. Offshore drilling has always been controversial among environmentalists, and further expansion of offshore drilling now seems far less likely. There are far fewer “easy” sources of oil today than there were 20 or 30 years ago, and offshore drilling, particularly deepwater drilling, is one of the last frontiers. However, before the oil industry and its allies can tap the natural resources they want, they might need to convince the public the Deepwater Horizon disaster is a once-in-a-lifetime event, not a sign of things to come. Oil rig blast prompts environmental concerns
As the Coast Guard searched for 11 missing crew members, authorities turned their focus to controlling an oil spill that could threaten the fragile ecosystem of the Louisiana coast. The oil currently being contained was residual from the explosion and sinking. "If it gets landward, it could be a disaster in the making," said a representative of the environmental group Gulf Restoration Network. Full Article.
Super “Saints” Fever Growing in New Orleans
The city of the Saints is filling up with ex-New Orleanians and others, many of whom look to cast off a legacy of football futility and disasters. "We're gearing up for Sunday just like Mardi Gras day," remarked a bar owner in the Quarter. "If the Saints win, we won't close at all. We'll stay open as long as people are standing." Full Article.
