Forecasters eye Gulf Disturbance

A low-pressure system over the Gulf of Mexico could become a tropical depression by the weekend. Weather forecasters, however, indicate that it is too early to tell exactly how it will affect the Gulf Coast. Full article.

 

Forecasters release revised 2010 Hurricane Season forecast

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently released it revised hurricane forecast for 2010, and lowered the previous outlook. It still expects an above-normal season, calling for 14 to 20 named tropical storms, of which 8 to 12 storms could become hurricanes. Full Article

Hurricane season may make oil spill worse

As hurricane season looms, forecasters, scientists and residents along the Gulf Coast worry that a major storm could make the oil spill worse. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says a hurricane, or a succession of them, may bring oil up from the depths of the Gulf of Mexico and then push it ashore. Forecasters say a season with multiple storms could send oil farther inland and spread it as far as Cape Hatteras, N.C.  Full article

 

Hurricane Season one month away

Hurricane season officially starts June 1 and NOAA plans to release the pre-season forecast on May 20. The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Preparedness offers a website that lists ways families and businesses can prepare for disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. Full Information.

 

NOAA Researchers to use technology to help predict hurricane behavior

Researchers with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will use Global Positioning System technology to measure the dynamics of moisture in the Gulf of Mexico and to track the fuel available to ramp up tropical systems moving through the Gulf.   Full Article.

 

Super “Saints” Fever Growing in New Orleans

The city of the Saints is filling up with ex-New Orleanians and others, many of whom look to cast off a legacy of football futility and disasters. "We're gearing up for Sunday just like Mardi Gras day," remarked a bar owner in the Quarter. "If the Saints win, we won't close at all. We'll stay open as long as people are standing." Corps Builds Massive Surge Barrier to Protect New Orleans

The Inner Harbor Navigation Canal Surge Barrier under construction near New Orleans is a massive undertaking, more than two miles long, 25 feet high and contains enough steel to build eight Eiffel Towers. Completion is scheduled for 2011. Full Article.
