Amazon, Microsoft Shine in the Cloud; Others Don't

Nasuni Corp., a company that’s been evaluation the Cloud market since 2009, recently concluded that only six of the leading 16 cloud storage providers are ready for primetime. Their decision: The top performers were Amazon S3 and Microsoft Azure. Other services that passed the evaluation included AT&T, Nirvanix, Peer 1 Hosting and Rackspace. Full article

 

Microsoft throws weight behind EU's Google probe

Microsoft recently threw its weight behind an existing probe by European Union authorities into whether rival Google Inc. is unfairly thwarting competition in the online search market. EU's Competition indicated that the Commission took note of Microsoft's complaint, and Google will get the opportunity to tell its side of the story. Full article

 

Nokia, Microsoft join forces to rival Apple, Google

Nokia and Microsoft recently combined forces to challenge their rivals (Apple, Google) and reclaim lost market shares. Nokia Corp., which happens to be the world’s largest mobile phone maker, recently announced it will use Microsoft Corp.'s Windows Phone software as the platform for its smart phones.   Full article.  

 

Microsoft discovers Internet Explorer Security flaw

Just when you thought it was safe to bank online, Microsoft recently announced the discovery of a flaw in Internet Explorer. That flaw could allow crooks to gather passwords and banking information. There's a manual work-around to correct the issue, but no downloadable software fix.   Full article.

 

Microsoft operating system update

Microsoft's looking at a new operating system and is said to be ready to demonstrate a new version of Windows that will work on low power devices. Microsoft is looking for ways to tailor this system to a tablet to compete with iPads. Full article.  

 

Changes for Bing

Microsoft will upgrade its Bing search engine, and will include Facebook in that change. Bing will now feature more recommendations and other input from social circles. Full article.

 

The new crop of Windows smartphones

For a tech company, a late product can be as deadly as a bad one. That may be the situation confronting Microsoft as it releases Windows Phone 7, its new smartphone operating system. The bad news: It might be too late for good news. The first batch of handsets running the new software goes on sale Nov. 8. Two products it works with include HTC Surround and Samsung Focus. Bing outgrows Yahoo

For the first time, Microsoft's Bing passed Yahoo! in the number of search users. In August, Bing had 13.9 percent of the U.S. Search market. Both search engines are powered by Bing's software behind the scenes. Full Article.  

 

Microsoft Working on iPad's Rivals

Microsoft’s Chief Executive said Microsoft needs to do better in the market for tablet computers that Apple Inc. has found success in with its iPad. Microsoft is working closely with hardware partners to improve the quality of tablet devices that run Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system. Tablet or slate devices, which are the thin, keyboard-free computers with touch screens that run Windows 7 haven't caught on yet, as computer makers struggle to create products with the responsiveness and ease of use of the iPad. Microsoft crosses swords with pirates

At a crime lab in Dublin, Microsoft's Donal Keating uses a custom-built microscope to use the abrasions and grooves on a disc's center, to match it to other fakes. He'll then try to trace the counterfeit disc to the factory and the crime syndicate that produced it. Full Article.
