Landrieu Presses President Obama on Disaster Recovery Fund

US Senator Mary L. Landrieu recently sent a letter to President Obama urging him to request an immediate $1.565 billion in emergency supplemental funding for FEMA's Disaster Recovery Fund. The fund supports disaster response, recovery and mitigation projects.   Full article

LA lawmakers want Obama to address offshore drilling

LA lawmakers hope President Obama will talk about spurring energy production in the Gulf in his State of the Union speech, as the issue is critical to generating jobs and improving the region's economy. Obama is expected to talk about the BP oil spill during the speech.  Full article.   

 

Deficit panel’s plan unveiled

President Barack Obama's bipartisan deficit commission recently launched a daring assault on federal deficits, proposing reducing Social Security cost-of-living increases, raising the retirement age, and reducing tax breaks. Their plan would also curb the growth of Medicare.   Full article.

 

LSU scientist receives presidential honor

Jayne Garno, an LSU chemistry professor, is one of 85 scientists honored by President Obama for the work done in the early stages of their independent research careers. Garno received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals. Full article.

 

What we don't know about small business lending

President Barack Obama's plan to offer capital to small banks with incentives to make loans to small companies passed the U.S. House of Representatives on June 17. However, experts are not clear the plan will manage better than previous efforts to increase the supply of credit. Beneath the problem, say some economists, policymakers, and observers, is a lack of information: We don't have the data that's needed to understand why small business lending is down—and what a proper fix might look like.    Full Article.  

 

U.S. economy: Recession concerns ease

Companies in the U.S. added more jobs than forecast in August, easing concern the world’s largest economy is sliding back into a recession. President Obama said there is “no quick fix” for the economy and urged Congress to pass a package of measures to help small businesses, including tax breaks and aid to ease credit. Full Article

 

President invited to Shrimp and Petroleum Fest

Lt. Gov. Scott Angelle invited President Obama to attend the 75th annual Louisiana Shrimp and Petroleum Festival, scheduled for Sept. 2-6 in Morgan City, and indicated that the President’s presence would be a tremendous show of support for the region. Full Article.  

 

Obama welcomes Saints

It took one shout of "Who Dat!" to get the celebration started in the White House on Monday as President Obama saluted the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints. The band played "When the Saints Go Marching In" as team members came in smiling to cheers and shouts. Full Article.  

 

New Orleans Saints invited to White House

On August 9, President Obama will welcome the Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints to the White House to honor their 2009 season. After the event, all Saints players and staff will visit troops and their families at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Full Article.
