Passion for community is an asset

A recent report,  the "Soul of the Community", issued by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, reflects a three-year survey conducted by Gallup World Poll in the foundation's 26 partner communities. The report quantifies the real relationship between attachment and growth: "Over five years, GDP growth was highest in communities with the greatest percentage of attached residents."  Full article.    

 

Banks ease loan standards, but crunch isn't over

A recent survey by the Federal Reserve's senior loan officer indicated that the credit crunch is easing, but it's far from over. Banks loosened their lending standards in the third quarter, but loans remained hard to get by recent historical standards, a trend expected to continue for the foreseeable future.  Full article.

That's the surprising finding of a nationally representative study of customer attitudes and behavior in response to the recent spate of high-profile product recalls. 87% of survey participants agreed they are more willing to purchase from, and remain loyal to, a company that handles its product recall in an honest and responsible way. Backseat seat belt use doubles with new law

The Louisiana Highway Safety Commission recently released a survey indicating that one year after a new law required back seat passengers to buckle up, 58 percent are heeding the requirement and using their seat belts. It was the first such review since the 2009 law took effect. Full Article.  

 

Manufacturing: The Misunderstood Industry

According to a 2009 survey, Americans believe that manufacturing is the most important industry for a strong national economy. Yet only 17 percent said their schools encourage manufacturing careers, and only 13 percent said their own parents encouraged them to pursue a career in manufacturing. The disconnect between these two views—that manufacturing is critically important, but not as a career—has dire implications for the U.S. since now, more than ever, competitive manufacturing rests on employee quality. Plans for full-time hires in 4Q exceed plans for layoffs

A survey of more than 4,000 U.S. business executives shows that 11% expect to hire full-time, professional-level employees in the fourth quarter. Eighty-six percent of respondents expressed some confidence in growth prospects, up slightly from the 85% who were somewhat optimistic in the third quarter. Full Article. 

 

Survey finds Gulf Coast residents anxious

A recent survey conducted by the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University  found that since the oil spill, many gulf Coast residents, including children, are fearful, sad and nervous. More importantly, even though the gusher of oil has been stanched, almost a quarter of residents still fear that they will have to move. Full Article.  

 

Social networking and games web usage increase

A recent Nielson survey indicated that Web users devoted more of their time online to social networking and games than they did last year. Time spent streaming videos and movies also increased but time spent searching the Web changed little. Full Article

 

Survey will count rice field food for migrating ducks, geese

A team of researchers soon will be surveying south LA and Texas rice fields to determine how much food is available from farming and natural plants for migrating waterfowl along the coastal prairie. The survey will determine how much rice is left behind from harvesting of first and second crops and the amount of wild seed in the soil. Data collected could be used to help get more funding for waterfowl. Full Article

 

Job Outlook Looking Up

Manpower employment services’ latest Outlook Report indicates that 18 percent of employers surveyed plan to increase full, part time, contract and temporary jobs in this quarter. Full Article.
