CART grads teach in Cenla schools

The first graduates of  CART, a site-based teacher program that takes qualified college graduates and pays their tuition as they work toward an LSU Master of Natural Science degree, began teaching in CENLA schools. The Orchard Foundation administers the program, which is funded by The Rapides Foundation to help Cenla school districts with limited resources offer rigorous education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.   Full article.

 

Learn & Serve grant opportunities for teachers

Lt. Governor Jay Dardenne and the LA Serve Commission recently announced the release of the 2011-12 Learn and Serve America grant application, representing $240,000 in service-learning grants for LA organizations. Submission deadline April 15, 2011. Full article.  

 

Rapides Parish Job Fair Held Despite Hiring Freeze

The Rapides Parish School Board held a job fair for elementary teachers--but technically, teachers aren't being hired right now. Northwood Principal Donald Welch said that even though the parish is currently under a hiring freeze, the job fair is a way to attract candidates for vacancies likely to become available during the year. $8 million for STEM Education in Cenla...

The Rapides Foundation has announced the award of an $8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) to fund the Central Louisiana Academic Residency for Teachers Partnership (CART). The award from the Department's Teacher Quality Partnership initiative is one of only 28 nationally, and one of only three in the South.

Exxon Mobil gives $500,000 grant to Teach for America

Exxon Mobil’s $500,000 grant to Teach for America will be used for math and science teachers. The grants will help public school students in low-income communities in South LA, Dallas, Houston and Wash., D.C. Louisiana has more Teach for America teachers per capita than any state. Full Article.

 

National Certified Teacher Levels Dip in LA

The Advocate reports the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards announced Wednesday that 132 LA teachers gained certification this year, 41 fewer than last year. Full Article.
