Networking

PERSON TO PERSON

  • Networking with industry peers and others in business is essential to growing your knowledge and skill level
  • Industry associations are a must, because it is through them that you learn about new technology and issues affecting your industry. Find out which associations best fit your business, join them, and try to go to seminars, trainings, conventions, etc.
  • Meeting and getting to know customers and potential customers in a social, non-selling setting provides you with an opportunity to build relationships and trust that is not possible in a business setting. People are more comfortable doing business with individuals they know and like, so get to know as many people as possible
  • Always try to be yourself; nobody likes a fake. If you are shy, be a good listener and others will love you. Learn as you go—join small groups first; build your confidence. Remember: “It doesn't cost anything to be nice to people." Networking with others is the cheapest and most effective marketing that you can do
  • Civic organizations are a great way to learn to work on teams, committees, and develop leadership skills that will be important as you grow your own business. It is also a great way to start public speaking. Joining civic organizations helps you learn what the planning and governing bodies are working on, and how those plans will affect your business
