Self Management

Your first step in organizing your business is getting yourself organized. The time management and organizational skills you develop for yourself will become the template for how you organize your business as it grows.


Begin with goals that can be completed in two weeks to one month timeframe. This will help you develop planning skills, which are necessary in setting long-term goals. After you set your goals, commit them to writing and post them on your wall to keep you focused. Remaining focused on your goals is key to achieving them. These goals should be simple, clearly defined, and attainable in a specified (reasonable) timeframe. For example, you can’t grow sales from $50,000 to $ 5 million in 90 days.
 

This section will address three specific areas of self management:

 

 1. Organization
 

You need to be able to organize yourself before you can organize a business. We have found that David Allen’s Getting Things Done is a great resource that can help you develop organizational skills and learn to create procedures.

 

2. Time management
 

Time Management skills are critical to achieving meaningful productivity and accomplishing goals. While sometimes frustrating, learning how to budget your time and understanding your limitations and abilities is necessary if you want to grow and effectively manage your business. Concentrate on results, not being busy. Focus your efforts on things that matter the most.
