Nearly 6,000 turn out for Komen Race

Nearly 6,000 men, women and children made their way to downtown Alexandria to watch or participate in the second Komen race. The runner from the most remote point was from Frankfurt, Germany -- one of the judges from the Louisiana International Piano Competition that was held this week at the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Building in Alexandria. The longest enduring breast cancer survivor was believed to be an 82-year-old woman from Bunkie, who walked the 5k (3.2-mile race). Full article.

More than 5,300 CENLA citizens will come to Alexandria on Saturday, October 15, to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Lawrence Searcy, one of the race co-chairs: "…We really set our sights on getting 6,000 participants downtown for the race…I am confident we will be close to that number…and people continue to register." Chamber Strategic Luncheon features Rapides Parish Army Community Covenant

Elected officials, community leaders, and Fort Polk officials will sign a Rapides Parish Army Community Covenant at the Chamber’s Strategic Luncheon on October 17. Guest speaker will be Brig. Gen. Clarence K.K. Chinn, commander of Fort Polk and the Joint Readiness Training Center. The $15.00 cost for the event, which is open to the public, includes lunch. Full article.

Alexandria’s Red River Chorale's October Festival will celebrate Oktoberfest in a different way—through a variety of compositions by revered German composers such as Brahms, Handel, Haydn and Mendelssohn. The Rapides Parish Fair opened on October 12 and will continue thru Sunday, Oct 16 at the Rapides Parish Coliseum fairgrounds. Events include a 4-H Tractor and Compact Tractor Driving Contest, food, rides, etc. Full information.

Food drive kicks off

Suddenlink Communications and The Food Bank of Central Louisiana recently kicked off the annual fall food drive to help stock the shelves of the food bank's pantry. This year’s goal: 60,000 pounds of non-perishable food items. Collection sites are: the Food Bank of Central Louisiana in Alexandria, town halls in Pineville, Ball Pollock, and Suddenlink offices in Pineville, Leesville, Many, Natchitoches and Winnfield. LA International Piano competition begins

The Louisiana International Piano Competition gets under way October 11 in Alexandria. The competition features 27 pianists from 13 countries, runs through October 15 in the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center on Third Street in downtown Alexandria. Cowboy Town sale not yet finalized

Cowboy Town is still in the process of changing hands. According to Paul Maxwell, the broker for the deal, the sale is still on target. On Jan. 15, The Town Talk reported that the 27.75-acre arena had come under a buy-sell agreement around the start of 2011. Full article.

Bunkie Elementary pupils help set world record

Bunkie Elementary School students recently help set a world record for shared reading when sixth-graders read the book "Llama Llama Red Pajama" by Anna Dewdney to kindergartners and pre-kindergartners. More than 2 million people took part in the Jumpstart Read For the Record event. Full article.

Boys & Girls Club celebrates new location

The Boys & Girls Club of Central Louisiana officially opened its new location in Alexandria at the Hadnot-Hayes Elementary building on Lincoln Road in Alexandria. Club Executive Director Dominic Bradford said residents throughout Cenla are happy to see the facility open. Full article.

Alexandria council unanimously bans smoking in city bars

The Alexandria City Council recently passed an amended version of an expanded smoking ordinance that will prevent smoking at bars and gaming establishments in city limits, as well as within 25 feet of city property and athletic arenas and ballparks. The ordinance goes into effect in 90 days, or Jan. 2, 2012. Full article.

Rapides school committee OKs funds for schools

The Rapides Parish School Board's District 62 Committee recently voted to pass on to the full board a motion to allocate $25 additional per weighted student. The $25 allocation, on top of the normal District allocation, would be a one-time expenditure. Full article.

Council members praise police chief selection

Alexandria City Council members agree with Mayor Jacques Roy's decision to name Loren Lampert as the new chief of the Alexandria Police Department. All five council members who spoke to The Town Talk were optimistic about what Lampert can bring to the city's police force. Full article.
